A new technique for treating severe burns

The Wald Hebron University Hospital surgically developed a regenerative therapy for the treatment of scars in patients with severe burns, which involves injecting adipose tissue and transplanting the patient's own stem cells into the affected area. Surgical director Joan Pey Barrett has been engaged in this research since 2009. He found that losing fat affects the improvement of skin and muscle function. Later he decided to try to treat burn patients. Although the technique has so far been applied to only two patients, it is believed that this will be extended to more patients. This method is now looking for 200 to 300 patients in Europe for clinical trials.
This technique involves extracting the patient's adipose tissue at a different body site, ie centrifuging and washing impurities. Another key is the isolation of adult stem cells. Once prepared, very small-diameter tools will be used to fill back scars and soft tissues and allow for the introduction of small amounts of cells in each treatment area. In the mixed adipose tissue and stem cell treatment area, "we found that this mixed medium has a very high improvement effect," says Joan Pereira Barrett. In this regard, he stressed that patients with scars on their face can “gradually improve the quality of their faces”. In addition, this type of treatment can be applied to various scars and can improve the function of the skin, as well as from the aesthetic point of view.
Perey Barrett said that although orthopedics has more and more ways to treat patients, the condition of burn patients is limited, this technique is still flawed, large areas of burns do not have enough skin to rebuild the burn part, reconstructed The skin is very thin, and it is easy to form scars. Due to lack of moisture in the skin, ulcers may appear.
